PCT 17 Gear List

(Updated 4/19)

Hey guys,

In my mission to take advantage of a slow cruise I’m trying to get some more articles up. Here’s a look at my gear plan for my upcoming PCT hike.

Sub-7 lb base weight for the win! Woooo!

Here’s the lighterpack which is a lot easier to read:

Some notes and changes from my AT hike:
Zpacks Zero is still going strong! Probably my favorite piece of gear last year. I sent it in to them to get a repair done on the bottom from a tear (only in the cordura layer) after sliding off some rocks the day before Mahoosuc Notch.  I liked their gear and customer service so much I decided to invest in some other things from them: a 10F sleeping bag (I added the full zip so I can really use it in a lot more conditions, like a full quilt) and a used hexamid tarp from the bargain bin (REALLY excited about this).  The PCT gets a lot less rainfall and I hope to cowboy camp as much as possible.  IF I can sell my Fly Creek for around $200 (not unrealistic) the tarp is only $25 more to save a good 14.2 oz savings total (I’m including the ground sheet and bug net).  For me- worth it.  The zpacks bag was a lot more expensive but at least I saved $50 with a sale, and got the fleece hat for free.  Worth it to be warmer?

In the Sierras I’m adding fleece bottoms if not before- took the plunge and ordered some tall inseam leggings from Athleta.  If the snow is bad, I might will bring microspikes as well…looking like it might be a heavy snow year.  I am helped by this by my “late” start a good week or two into May though.  Small possibility I will take my baselayers (cap 4 hoodie and the fleece bottoms) the whole way…we will see how the weather shapes up.

I will add a MP3 player because the batteries are more efficient for my primary phone use which is listening to music.  There’s a possibility I will change my phone but really not sure on that yet.  I haven’t yet found a phone that’s as light, that still has an ok camera but replaceable batteries.  Actually found a phone only a little heavier, but less than a year old, with the ability to take wide-angle photos AND a replaceable battery.  Hope it works well!

AT Gear List 2016

Hey gearheads,

Here’s my budget-ish gear list for my hike last year on the AT.  I don’t know how to get wordpress on my computer.  So I tried to use some dubious cut ‘n’ paste job from the interweb. Hope it looks ok!

You can also see it at this link: https://www.lighterpack.com/r/93fr94

Hope this helps in your planning!

Hey guys,

Almost a month ago my book became available for download on Amazon.  You can check it out here!

Check it out and leave a review!  This helps writers like me have our books be more visible on Amazon (as things like the category “Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Poetry > Japanese & Haiku” are not exactly popular (my book is currently #7 there).

I’ve had to remove my posts here because the book’s been published, but I hope in the near future to add some other bits and ends about the hike, such as miles hiked each day, my mail drop plan, and gear list.

I do believe that it’s a really different look at a travelogue- summarizing an entire day’s events into its very essence, just a snapshot.  And that’s super relevant considering the twitter lifestyle of today.

Speaking of twitter!  We have a lot of twits who are just now assuming office.  I’m not in the US anymore, I have mixed feelings about this.

From my 7/4/16 entry:

The National Holiday

I’m from this place but

not Of it; I pass through but

no longer live Here.

We have some crazy stuff going on right now and I’m not sure what actions to take, living at sea, nationless.  And then basically spending my time in the US this year again in The Nature.  Well, I guess I can encourage thought, empathy;  try to be a kind person and an open one and importantly, an informed one.

In the meantime I am preparing for my upcoming PCT hike where I again hope to do some writing.  Will I write haikus again?  They are very low pressure and succinct, I sort of like that.  Or regular poetry, so I can say more?  Or even blogging-forrealskies?  Well, I’ve got a while before I even get out there.
